EDGE Technology

Technology

EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) is a technology of high-rate package data transmission in GSM networks. With the help of EDGE, it is possible to organize data transmission with the highest possible speed – up to 473.6 Kbit/sec.

In practice, mobile phones utilized in the Ukrainian market allow transmission speeds of up to 236 Kbit/sec., which is several times more than the speed of data transmission by means of GPRS technology.

Advantages

EDGE already makes it possible to:
  • get access to Internet resources;
  • receive and send E-Mail messages;
  • download images, melodies, games and video files from WAP sites;
  • exchange MMS messages several times faster than through GPRS.

In the foreseeable future, EDGE will allow MTS subscribers to:

  • get high-speed access to Internet resources;
  • take advantage of IP telephony services;
  • watch video and to play back audio on-line;
  • play on-line games.

Coverage

EDGE coverage is similar to GPRS coverage from MTS.

Phones

For making sure that your phone supports EDGE, please, consult:
  • Your phone manual;
  • the manufacturer’s web-site.

Settings

You will automatically use EDGE services in the event that:
  • You are in the EDGE coverage zone;
  • Your phone supports EDGE;
  • You have activated and set at least one of the GPRS services provided at present by MTS: WAP, MMS or the Internet.

Benefits

EDGE allows:
  • to use the existing GPRS services more effectively (quick and reliable):
  • to use a number of new services for third generation networks:
    • high-speed access to the Internet;
    • on-line games;
    • other services requiring high data rates.

Tariffs

Tariffs for using MMS, WAP and the Internet services by means of EDGE are similar to tariffs for the corresponding GPRS services in your tariff package.
